Wainwright, Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells - Second Edition
For a dozen years in the 1950s and 60s Alfred Wainwright worked on his magnum opus, A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. Seven volumes illustrated with distinctive hand-drawn maps and sketches were finished by 1966. An eighth volume covering some "Outlying Fells" followed a few years later.
He published his first book of what have come to be known as the "Wainwright Walks" around sixty years ago. Ever since then these uniquely illustrated guides have been greatly valued by enthusiasts for Lake District walking. Toward the end of his life, however, he recognised that things change even on the mountains, and that it would become necessary to bring the walks up to date. Chris Jesty (who had previously worked with Wainwright on some of his other books) did a great job in producing a second revised edition. He kept Wainwright's style whilst updating the content to allow for changes in the landscape. So Wainwright's walks are available to a new generation.
