Westmorland Heritage by Alfred Wainwright
Description of Westmorland Heritage, Alfred Wainwright
Westmorland Heritage was Wainwright's tribute to the ancient county of Westmorland as it was absorbed into the newly created county of Cumbria in 1974. In almost 500 pages it includes nearly 2,000 sketches of landscape, towns and villages, including many individual buildings from all over the old county.
Originally published in 1974 Westmorland Heritage was reprinted in 2004. Wainwright described it as, "A book for those who have their roots in Westmorland". Well, yes, I fit that description but am convinced that it ought to have an appeal far wider. Like his other book of townscapes, (Kendal in the Nneteenth Century, published in 1977 and now long out of print), it illustrates Alfred Wainwright's feeling for places of many types, not only his beloved mountains.
