Lake District Towns and Villages
As well as its lakes and mountains the Lake District has many small towns and villages , each with its own special character and history. Some, such as Kendal and Cockermouth developed many centuries ago around the needs of their local, largely agricultural, communities. Others exist because of industry, such as Coniston and Glenridding, housing the miners and quarrymen labouring in the mountains around. More recently it was the tourist industry that triggered the development of hotels and boarding houses. We have here both narrative history and photographic timelines full of interest.
