The Dawn of Green: Manchester, Thirlmere, and Modern Environmentalism by Harriet Ritvo
Description of The Dawn of Green: Manchester, Thirlmere, and Modern...
The fate of Mardale village, now drowned under the extended and deepened Haweswater, is well known. Whenever the weather is dry for a sustained period (not that often given the Lake District weather) people drive along the narrow lanes to reach a spot from which they can see the remaining walls and building foundations emerge from the water. Less well known is the fate of the communities in the Thirlmere valley. Once there were two small lakes. People lived in the valley during the time of Wordsworth and for generations before. The creation of this reservoir triggered what might be described as the pattern for conservationist campaigning. Although others have mentioned it more or less briefly Harriet Ritvo's book fills an important gap in the written history of the Lake District.
